Q: What is troop upkeep?

A: This is the amount of food your troops eat per hour above your protected upkeep amount.

Q: What is protected upkeep?

A: You can see this amount if you press the information button on your warehouse. If you keep your food below this number your troops will never eat food.

Q: Will my troops starve?

A: Troops will never starve, even if you have no food in your castle.

Q: How do I increase my food protected from troop upkeep?

A: Research in the Advancement tab under "Advanced Silo", certain talent points, upgrading your warehouse/duty general level and the wall general Shajar-Al-Durr will increase your food protected from troop upkeep.

Q: How do I reduce my troop upkeep?

How to Hold Food Over Protected from Upkeep Limit

So you've maxed out all your research and have Shajar on the wall, but still don't have enough food to get to the three billion food you need for a single build? Time for a few more tips:

1. Stockpile food in the alliance warehouse every day up until the maximum for your keep level.
2. Hoard food boxes as much as possible, avoid using them for builds that are under the protected from upkeep level.
3. Use food production boosts and don't collect for 12 hours to maximize your in-city production.
4. Send all your gatherers out to the largest food tiles you can find, then bring them all back at the same time when you're ready to build.
5. Make a food alt.

Food Alt

Technically having more than one account on the server is against Evony's TOC, but generally, punishment is reserved for players making fake referrals. Many players opt to create a food alt and build just enough siege to farm.

This allows you to keep your upkeep under your in-city food production amount, effectively allowing you to hold as much food as you want without worrying about your troops eating it all.

Generally, you'll want your alt to be at least K25 in order to loot it more effectively.

Closing Thoughts

Food is always going to be one of the most annoying things in any player's build unless you're coining very heavily and VIP 18+. If you aren't, make sure you don't use your food boxes unless you absolutely need to and never allow your troops to eat your food if you can help it.
