How does Evony decide which servers merge?

As promised in the developer calls, Evony is merging servers more aggressively than before (roughly once a quarter). However, it seems that while larger players enjoy server mergers, not all players are always so keen on the results, especially when BoB servers end up merging with NAP servers...check out our guide on FAQ and tips for surviving server merges if you haven't already!

New Server Mergers Announced!

This particular post is going to detail what does and does not end up in the criteria list for server merges.

November 29, 2022

First up, let's take a look at the most recent server merges announced below. As you can see, a number of servers were merged with the majority being C3 servers.

Official Reasons for Server Merges

Although grilled on every developer call, Evony representatives historically deflect the question of why specific servers are merged, indicating something along the lines of the following:
Evony has its own criteria for determining server merges, which are based on player activities

What we KNOW about Server Merges

  • Servers of all continents can be merged;
  • Servers are merged within the same continent and usually close together in number;
  • Some servers that were merged had users sending requests to customer support to be merged;
  • Not all servers that had users requesting mergers were merged.

Rumors for Server Merges

Based on such, players have guessed that the following could be potential reasons for server mergers:
  • Number of players logged in each day;
  • Total power of server by average age;
  • Amount of coining (spending) on a server; and/or
  • SVS win/loss ratio.

Comparing Merged Servers

Yesterday I took some time to go through the servers that were merged, taking a look at the following:
  • Number of "high" VIP levels on each server (VIP 18+)
  • Alliance Power
  • Individual Player Power
  • Ascended Generals
  • SVS Rankings
As the majority of alliances were near C3, I focused on these. Below is a compilation of post-server merger data:

As a control, here are a few additional servers that were not merged in the same range.

Observations on Server Merged vs Unmerged

At first glance the merged numbers are interesting. Most merged servers have a similar amount of VIP 19+ and VIP 18 post-merger, indicating a roughly balanced spend. The alliance sizes and top 3 players across the board are also similar, meaning Evony likely put some thought into the pairing to make these balanced servers.

On the other hand, the random sampling of servers that were not picked for mergers was even more fascinating. It turns out these unmerged servers in this range have little to no VIP 19 or VIP 18 on the server, and have much lower activity and spend than the merged servers.

Conclusions

Based on the data presented, a revised hypothesis on how Evony decides which servers to merge could be as follows:

Evony developers look for large DROPS in spending on servers that are MODERATELY competitive then combines servers in a range to be roughly similar sized with other moderately competitive servers. This drives KNOWN spenders to increase spending.
