How does Evony decide which servers merge?

As promised in the developer calls, Evony is merging servers more aggressively than before (roughly once a quarter). However, it seems that while larger players enjoy server mergers, not all players are always so keen on the results, especially when BoB servers end up merging with NAP servers...check out our guide on FAQ and tips for surviving server merges if you haven't already!

Top 10 Most Often Missed Evony Tips and Tricks

Avoid Pitfalls!

Evony's entire business model centers around getting you to play suboptimally and spend recklessly. They don't make the things below obvious and even seasoned veterans discover years later that they've been falling into these common traps or not taking advantage of easy wins.

Make sure to check out all ten tips below to make sure you aren't losing out!

Second talent tree unlocks at K25 or VIP 13

This one is easy to miss, but at keep level 25 or VIP level 13 an extra talent book opens up at the bottom of the talent screen. This allows you to switch between battle mode talents and peace mode talents once every 24 hours or prorate the switch cost using gems.

Monarch crowns should be constantly switched

Which crown do you have equipped? Construction, Troop Training, Research? If your answer was anything other than "it depends on what I'm doing" then you're doing it wrong. Crowns should be switched as frequently as you do different tasks and only need to stay on as you're beginning the timer. Once you start your build you can switch your crown at will and won't lose any benefits.

Alliance choice is the most important decision in game

Picking your alliance is the choice between playing casually and playing competitively. If you decide you want to play efficiently, joining the most active alliance that runs the most boss rallies is always going to be your best option. Most servers only have one or two top alliances and if you're not in one of them you're falling behind daily.

Always save RSS for consumption event

The consumption event cycles around in the following pattern:
  • Resource Consumption  - 10 days
  • Speed-up (traps and crafting) - 3 days
  • Speed-up Consuming - 10 days
  • Speed-up (trap and research) - 3 days
There's also a separate cycle for the following:
  • Tactical Scroll Consuming - 10 days
  • Refining Stone Consuming - 10 days
  • Blood of Ares Consuming - 10 days
All the 10-day consuming events are excellent for spending that specific item if you have the patience to save. However, the RSS consumption event is the most important as it gives massive speed-ups, stamina, resources and crafting materials. The other events generally give additional resources.

Prioritize NUMBER of subordinate cities

The number of subordinate cities you can hold (up to 8) is determined by your prestige rank. If you drop in ranking you can still keep the subordinate cities you have but cannot drop the ones you have to pick up new ones over your new maximum capacity.

Sometimes players wonder if they should drop something like two green Americas to pick up a gold Japan.

NO. If you can, trade it to a bigger player for a large amount of stamina, but never under any circumstances lose subordinate city SLOTS as a trade for quality or culture upgrades.

Big players have been spending up to 90,000,000 gems, that's right, 90 million gems for an extra subordinate city slot as it offers you the following:
  1. Additional attack, hp, and defense based on your talents and research trees
  2. Additional subordinate city general debuffs
  3. 9 additional pieces of debuff gear per slot
Not even upgrading to a historical city could make up for the loss of that many buffs.

Troops do NOT starve without food

Some players might consider this the most important tip on the list, but your troops will NOT die without food. On the other hand, if you have food open, they WILL eat you out of house and home until you have food under your upkeep cost.

Storing food is one of the most annoying aspects of Evony that every player will eventually deal with, but luckily we have a guide on that if you need additional help: https://evony.nerfplz.com/2021/08/how-to-hold-and-store-more-food.html

Avoid building too many troops early

Early game (before K33), building troops should only be done for the following reasons:
  • Rallying bosses if you're the only bosser in the alliance;
  • Building enough troops to join rallies and farm.
Some might say to build troops for the undead event but this still isn't worth it as you'll just need to heal your wounded every week.

Until your research and troops are unlocked to the T12 and T13 level, lower-tier troops are useless. Save your RSS for upgrading your buildings.

"Power" is an almost meaningless metric

Some players have an unhealthy obsession with the "power" metric. It's everywhere in the game including the following:
  • Player "Power"
  • Gear "Power"
  • General "Power"
  • Troop "Power"
  • Monster "Power"
All of these are a guideline to see at a quick glance what something's potential strength could be. However, a 30% sub troop training capacity can add just as much power as a 30% ranged attack refine and 10 million T14 cav with no research adds way more power than a fully researched castle with a million T14 cav. The sooner you learn how arbitrarily useless this number is, the sooner you can start to be a decent player.

Both BoB and NAP servers are successful

Early in a server's life and often even later, players also have an unhealthy obsession with deciding between "Bubble or Burn" or "Non-aggression Pact" servers. Opponents of each say the following:
  • Bubble or Burn servers destroy a server's overall power and slow down development
  • Non-aggression Pact servers have weak bubble games and don't know how to play PVP
However, it turns out there are good servers riding both tracks and honestly, everyone takes this decision far too seriously. Whatever works for your server is fine and there are no wrong decisions here.

"Coiners" aren't always good players

Similar to the power is a meaningless metric tip is the Coiners aren't always good players tip. Sometimes it can be tough to tell who is a good player and who is simply so large they can send default marches and zero any castle in the game.

A coiner is a person who spends money on the game, often in massive amounts.

These players tend to be very strong with very high power, but that doesn't automatically translate to being good at the game. Often, copying the largest player's generals and strategies ends up leading to a pitfall that is far more costly for smaller players than bigger players. Pick your teachers wisely!

Honorable Mention: Don't Mix Marches

Against monsters, always send a single tier of troops. Against other player castles, adding small layers of every single troop is important but often players fall into the early game trap of sending half one type of troop and half another.

A common example of this is for a general like Simeon. His skill says he buffs Siege and Archers, so some players are tempted to send a few 100k archers and a few 100k siege as both are buffed.

However, the majority of your power comes from your equipment refines and skillbooks which are limited in quantity. This means that focusing your power on just Archers will result in a multiplicative effect that far exceeds what splitting your troop types will give you.

Conclusions

Hopefully the tips above will help your gameplay for both new players and for seasoned veterans! If you didn't know about a tip above don't feel bad, many players who haven't read this article are STILL making the same mistakes!
